Literacy Volunteers of

Southeastern Fairfield County (LVSFC)



Volunteer Opportunities


These positions are available to tutors, learners, and any others who just want to get involved with LVSFC.

Training is provided for all volunteer positions.

 

Job Description and Certification Requirements


Tutor - Work one-on-one or in small groups in either Basic Literacy (BL) or English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL).

Purpose

To help an adult eighteen years of age or older:

  • Improve his/her literacy skills.
  • Learn the English language.
  • Use newly learned skills to meet self-identified goals.

Training

  • Satisfactorily complete a BL or ESOL Tutor Training Workshop. More Information...
  • Participate in at least one in-service training session each year.

Qualifications

  • Be at least 18 years of age.
  • Be able to speak and understand English well enough to communicate clearly.
  • Read at a 12th grade level or above.
  • Have no record of conviction for any crime of violence, or be recommended by Probation and Parole.
  • Be dependable, prompt, interested in helping others, sensitive to different backgrounds and cultures, patient, optimistic, and respectful of confidentiality.

Tutor location

Tutoring takes place at LVSFC or an approved site in the community.

Hours

The tutor and student are encouraged to meet for two hours each week. In addition, the tutor will need to spend time preparing for each lesson.

Duration of Work

We would like each tutor to volunteer for a minimum of one year. This allows tutor-student teams to build a trusting relationship and to see progress.


Fundraising – Collaborate with the staff to plan and implement fundraising activities.

Plan Event.
Set a fundraising timetable.
Develop an action plan.
Implement the plan.


Office Support – Work with LVSFC staff to answer phones, update files, research questions from public groups, collate workshop materials, etc. Prefer 3-4 hour commitment on regular basis. Must be able to read and write English.


Computer Lab Assistant – Assist learners in the computer lab. Some computer knowledge required.


Newsletter Staff – Collect and write articles for newsletter, maintain mailing list, coordinate printing and distribution, work with LVSFC staff to include events and items of interest.
