Literacy Volunteers of

Southeastern Fairfield County (LVSFC)

Our mission is to enable people to achieve personal goals through literacy.

We accomplish this by providing tutoring and other educational services directly to adults in Southeastern Fairfield County who want to increase their reading and English as a second language skills.

Our tutoring is free, confidential, individualized and learner-centered.  Through training and support, we help to build the skills and abilities that enable volunteers to grow and succeed.

Serving the communities of Bridgeport, Darien, Easton, Fairfield, Monroe, New Canaan, Norwalk, Shelton, Stratford, Trumbull, Weston, Westport & Wilton

We at LVSFC believe the ability to read is critical to personal freedom.  As our culture becomes more complex and dependent on technology, being literate becomes even more crucial to surviving and achieving our potential.

Description

Literacy Volunteers of Southeastern Fairfield County (LVSFC) teaches adults to read, write and/or speak English.  We work with those adults who have the lowest skills—those below the fifth grade level.  If the learners do not speak English as their first language, LVSFC works primarily on conversational English.  The learning takes place in small groups or one on one.

LVSFC trains and supports volunteers to teach either Basic Literacy (BL) or English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL).  The training programs take place over a period of 4-6 weeks.  After the training, the volunteers are matched with one or more learners to meet on a day and time that is convenient for both the tutor and learner.  Tutors and learners work together for two hours per week.

The number of learners we can serve is limited only by the number of volunteers available and the amount of individual donations and other funding we receive.

History

LVSFC was established in 1976.  We are affiliated with ProLiteracy America, and are one of 350 nationwide affiliates.  There are 14 other affiliates in the State of Connecticut.  Through the use of trained volunteers and professionals, LVSFC has positively impacted the lives of thousands of Fairfield County residents over the past 29 years.

In 2003 LVSFC merged with Family Services Woodfield (FSW).  For more than 150 years, FSW has been working to help area residents improve their lives.  Today’s FSW offers residents of the six-town greater Bridgeport area, Fairfield County and the State of Connecticut, some two-dozen programs designed to help them build stronger futures for themselves, their families and their communities.
